Setting up my first big tank. 230ish gallons...prolly closer to 280 after the sump. Would 2-400watt Marineland heaters be sufficient to keep it at the 80 degree mark?
Thanks

I would go with a third 400 watt heater. I like to have as close to 4 watts / gallon as I can. If one of your heaters fail, you have time to fix the situation. But then again I like to go a little bit on the overboard side :)

It also largely depends on the room temperature. If your room is always around 78 you wont need much in the way of heaters. However, if it gets to 65 you are going to need a few beefy heaters.

I should also mention that Marineland seems to have/had a quality issue with their recent heaters with lots of failures and even an explosion reported: http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/equipment/103155-beware-marineland-stealth-pro-heater.html

I personally had my Stealth heater fail and try to cook my betta.

agreed to postalpenguin about the failures. i bought a 400w marineland for my 120 about 4 months ago. the piece of junk could never keep the water close to where i had the temp set. so, i set up a 75 (which this sits beside an airconditoner) again, couldnt keep 75g of water close. I ended up using 2 hydor 400w heaters, one in each tank. I actually got these at a yardsale (with a 55g, hoods, lights, plants, chemicals, penguin 200, some whisper filter and a rena xp4. all were in mint condition and i only paid $25 for it all!) but they work awesome. couldnt as for a more consistant heater.
