Heaters.....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I always swore by Jager, and they worked great for me, but the last 2 that I got have been pretty iffy. They work, but the temp and dial are way off what they should be.

I use on both my tanks Eheim Jaeger's and I dislike the way that you have to set the tempeture, but I just hook them into an Inkbird controller and they work perfectly. I have the temp probe inside the tank and a digital thermostat to make sure the temp is correct. It seems like every heater on the market has complaints.

I agree with Pulcher. For how cheap they are, put an InkBird heater controller on the tank. Gives redundancy to the thermostat so if it gets stuck on, the controller will shut it off. It also has high and low alarms, so you can program it and the alarm will go off if the heater stops working and the temperature gets too low.

As for heaters, I use the AquaTop heaters on Amazon. I have also heard that the Via Aqua heaters work quite well, especially for the price. Also, with a controller, in my opinion, you can buy cheaper heaters since you have the redundancy.

Fluval E series is all I will buy going forward. I also have a Neotherm I like, but not as much as I like the Fluvals. All of my experience using heaters with an analog thermostat has been rubbish, as they are inaccurate and not constructed in a way that lets them sit on the glass well.

The Fluval E is great - digital thermostat with colour codes (makes it real easy when someone is checking on your fish for you - just tell them green = good), built in guard, and the placement of the mount makes it very firm on the glass. It is a challenge to remove it from the tank. I have had fish slam glass heaters into the tank, and had them dismount the wobbly mount of the neotherm. No fish has been able to shift the fluval.

I just buy whatever is available when I need a new heater. But I throw them out as soon as they turn a year old.

I bought one of the Finnex titanium heaters that hooks up to a controller, it's been working pretty well so far.

Although not the only setup I would rely on...been using titanium with Ranco controller. If I did it again, may consider some heaters with their own thermostats too. One thing good about titanium heaters is no thermostat to go bad.

All good inputs, since my tank went from 80 to 72 overnight I panicked and went out and got what I could, got a decent deal too. Local petco matched their online price and I got 2 Aqueon 200 watt heaters for less than $48 total
