HEATING 6' ROUND x 2' HIGH INDOOR POND

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, a BTU is 1 F for 1 lb of water; heat input. You must measure the rate of heat loss from a particular set-up ; it is irrational to try to calculate it.
I am down to my last 2 Vis-atherms out of about a dozen( in about 5yr of service); both are stuck on ,so I use them as pond heaters ( always on) or connect them through my 60yr old Es Es thermostat to control temperature in an aquarium.

Insulating the pond helps a lot.
One interesting idea that I have seem used was a very small water heater that was hooked to plastic piping run through a gravel substrate in the pond, The water was pumped by a small electric inline water pump thay only came on when the sensor in the pond fell below a set temp, then turned off again when it exceeded that temp. Since the water in the lines never mixes with the pond water it does not have to be dechlored. The water heater was a 3g gas or electric (dual use) salvaged from a a small wrecked RV.
The guy who owned it said it worked well.
The pond was in a poorly heated rec room in Puyallup, Wa. and was L shaped and totalled about 800g. It had styrofoam insulation between the pond and the frame.

where can we get insulation for the indoor pond to also help out with keeping it heat controlled.

I am really liking this idea, What kind of senser did you use? Also what what type/size of plastic piping, and how exactly was it ran though the gravel?

My pond will be setup in a cold basement with concrete floors. I plan on building a frame around it to help insulate it.
