Heating a 300 gallon tank ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also not all heaters are equal and we have different places we keep the tanks. I like the jager heaters they are huge and seem to heat well.

I would opt for more than two i have a 300 and a 100 in my 150 and I can't get the water passed 78 for the life of me, with the ambient room temp being 70-75. I would opt for 3-4 just to be safe

Get better brand heater. I run 2 heater in my sump for about 350 gal works fine got to 89degree when treating tank but run 82year round.
dr.foster and smith heater are always pretty cheap. I get a lot from there and over $49 dollar free shipping.

What brand of heaters? I run a 250 in a 120+sump and it works good but it's in a Warmer area of the house.

I use (2) 300w heaters on my 125 and the same on my 150. I never had any problem. I have always doubled what is recommended for heating and filtration.

Great. Keep us posted

With two 300 W's the temp is staying mid 70's, which is where I like it to be. I am running a pool filter (small pool canister filter, with the insides removed - and built an exterior prefilter on the intake end so I never have to open the filter up for cleaning.
I'm going to try a couple fish in it this week. Bare Bottom right now, but will add gravel, etc.

Sounds good - two then - thanks!
I guess it would not be efficient with them in the overflow boxes ?

We have one blocked off overflow box on our 300 gallon tank. The return from our wet/dry filter enters the overflow box from the top. (It's a HOB type return) We've kept a 400 Watt heater in that overflow box for 6 1/2 years... it works great in there. Our second heater went kaput in the last month. Unfortunately, we were extremely busy and did not do a water change in 3 weeks. Don't know when the heater died, but the water was really cold when I finally got around to doing a water change. One pacu did not look good...he had a lot of scrapes and scratches that looked like were ready to turn into ich. Had a house full of company, couldn't find my 400 Watt replacement heater, so in desperation grabbed a 1000W heater with controller that was one destined for our big upgrade. Put the temp. probe in the wet/dry filter and the heater in the plugged off overflow box. Set the temp to 82.7. Adonis was fine by the next day. I did find my new 400 W heater, but I decided I really like knowing exactly what the water temp of the tank is, so left the 1000W in.

I suggest you place a return from your filtration system in the overflow box. As long as water is circulating out of the overflow box into your tank, the overflow box is an ideal place for your heater. If your room is warm, a 400W heater should work. (Our living room can drop into the 50s) I got about 4 years out of the first heater and 2 1/2 yrs from the second heater. I guess that's makes for a good argument to have two heaters....heaters don't last forever.
