Heating big tanks

In the build I am planning out out now and picking up parts as time permits. I am building mine kind of like the walls in your house. You have an inner wall then studs and then an outside wall. In between studs is insulation. I had thought about making the viewing section double paneled. but haven't sold myself on that yet. It's going to be a plywood build but I don't want it to look like a plywood build ya-know. Even the pipes going to the filter will be insulated. No matter how you do it I think if you can reduce heat loss without looking cheesy then go for it. My ele bill is usually under $40 a month because I insulate the hell out of stuff. If You're still worried about your ele bill rising you can build your own solar panels. Plans all over the interwebs for that. That is something I myself am thinking about.

Well I don't know about solar panels lol but I think I'll insulate the sump for sure and I'll attempt to insulate my pipes as long as it doesn't look to bad. I'm being told at home that they want 3 sides viewable. I guess I can only put Styrofoam on the glass against the wall.

My 300 gallon tank runs at a steady temp of 81 degrees and the heater hasn't turned on it a month. The external pump for the sump keeps it heated. It's a glass tank in a room that stays at about 72 degrees.

Thanks strollo22, sounds like your situation will be exactly like mine I'm glad to hear you have no issues, can I ask what kind of return pump you're running, what's your gph?

+1 on the polysterene. Even if its only on the back & base of the tank, it will make a difference. You can get it at any Lowe's/Home Depot.
