Working on a 300gallon rubbermaid pond right now and wondering if while im digging out the trench to run my pump wiring if I should plan for a heater as well. The pond will be in a sunny spot and set completely in the ground. The filter will be a 900GPH Laguna pumping up to a DIY waterfall box. We do get pretty cold here but im wondering if I could just cover it with something or if I should go ahead and install a heater?

You can. I would cover it in the winter but it will still be very expensive to run in the winter regardless.

What about putting an in-line or putting a 300W heater inside the waterfall box and just running it when it gets below freezing?

I'll follow along on this one, as I have a similar question.

My tank is not completely in the ground.

Heater is dependant upon stock list.

Natives and Goldfish don't require a heater...

Are there any fish available at petsmart (besides goldfish and rosies) that would not require a heater?

Chinese High Fin Shark might make it without heat unless we have terrible winters like we have the last two years in DFW. I'd just put 1-2 400 watt heaters in there and use them when you need to. You'd only need them maybe 3 months out of the year and on rare days where it gets really cold

looks good. y don't u just stock with some nice natives sun fish, blue gill, pumpkin seed? they look really cool and you wouldn't need a heater.
