i just built a 6' high iguana enclosure and was wondering if there was any safe way to to heat the bottom. its plywood with astroturf on top, i was thinking of a heating pad on the plywood with Plexiglas on top the heating pad and the turf on top of that? any input would be apreciated( it's the zoo med under tank heater)

i would just build different levels under the basking light and not worry about belly heat. your ig if healthy will be sleeping on branches and at the top of the cage. if he sleeps at the bottom on the ground i would think something is wrong. put a couple of different basking spots in the tank. have one stay on all the time (infra-red bulb) so he has a place to warm up at night if he wants.

oh yeah,if its wood you could cut and screen off a red basking bulb on the side down low.I would use some heavy duty chicken wire or something.Dont want the iggy touching it.I think i just copied the above post in dif words, lol.Sorry

i've used heat rocks in the past. some people say they are no good but i never had a problem with them. i've used them with several different snakes and lizards.

too many known failures reported,I just wouldnt risk it.I myself had 2 herps burned bad from them.

I agree. Iguanas are daytime baskers and should be provided heat from above. I'd pick up a ceramic heat element if I were you as well. What are all the dimentions? Sounds like a nice cage.

it is 30"x4'x6' screen on 3 sides plywood back pretty rough looking. i currently have the food on the bottom, should i put a shelf in for the food (he hasn't eaten all day), i have a 60 watt che is that enough for summer in northern california?

I would put a few shelves in so your iguana can bask at whatever temperature zone suits it. Just remember to have a spot with a basking temperature between 90-95. I don't know how warm it is in Northenr Cali but if you do keep your iguana outdoors, make sure it has a place to get out of the sun or it can die from a heat stroke.

no its inside, and has a 100w basking lamp as well as the che. what should the night temp be? he is not very big at 2'(looks even smaller in the big setting)
