its all in the power of free will............

I would say Religion could, and should, be debated in a civilized and educated manner..and also here in a lounge of fish guys.

And I don't know whether God, or some higher entity, exists...I believe in a superior threshold, level, more elevated than the one we are in. I believe in a level of spirituality and that such spirituality is everywhere and can be what we conceive it to be...

Being a paramedic in the city of Philadelphia I think I've seen it all. Humanity at its best and worst. I can honestly say I don't know. Every time I think I have a clue I witness something that changes my mind. I do know one thing for sure. Faith (not saying I have it) is a powerfull thing and it takes courage to have it, not ignorance. I had an experience two days ago with a women about to die from cancer. My partner is a very religious man, a Christian. He and this women had a moment together that I will never forgett as long as I live. We were doing everything we could to help ease this women's suffering but she was too far gone for medicine or science to help. He knealed down beside her and whispered, "Its in God's hands now". She looked up at him and said, "I know". Now I know by my written acount of what happend next you can't truly understand what I had witnessed. I saw how thier faith lifted the wieght of her affliction and gave her a sense of peace that you could litterly see come over her. Her heart rate slowed her breathing became less labored. Something happened. These two people who had never met shared something I've never knew could exist. I'm not moved my many thigs but this moved me. It was the first time in my career that I had to fight back tears. I'm no youngster either. I'm 34 years old have two children 13 and 6. I help raise a family and do what I can on the streets to help my community. I'm not saying I am a believer now; in any religion, faith or higher power. But this women did believe and I witnessed it. I just don't know.

For the right amount of money(Donations)you can become a wonderfull Christian couple. All i have to do is show up every sunday and feed the Donation envelope and all my sins will be forgiven. Or atleast this is how it seems. A woman on her third marriage with kids out of wedlock who has struggled with alcoholism and drug rehab had no problem getting married because they are a good Donators at our church. Yet we on our first marriage had to wait to be married because We didnt have a history of donations to the church. We have always donated into the baskets passed around not knowing your incone played a part in going to Heaven. Since we were married we have not entered a church or will we ever again. Alot of people will look down apon this comment, but im not bashing chuch going people. I guess the ever so forgiving GOD can forgive us for not being rich enough to please our Minister.....

I spent the first 30 years of my life saying things like many other on this thread have said about religion and church....I thought it was a waste of time and stupid and there is no God...Some of you have a point that God is what you make of it, I have tried to make him the leader in my and my families life...People are not perfect; christian or not, bad \Ministers and good Ministers....Bad parishiners and good...For the people who say church is about money, and people are choosen for events because of tithes, should change where they worship....I am not a Bible thumping christian, but I try to be the best person I can, because I spent the first 30yrs of my life being the worst I could...I work for the state of California Department of Corrections (prison) and I see people who lived Godless lives and the effects of the choices they made and the results every single day...

:nilly: where to start on a thread like this. First off Christians hear this argument all the time. You don't like what the Bible says about eternity, and how to get there so you vent. Fine vent, but remember THE DEBATE ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT GOD EXISTS, HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR OPINIONS ON HOW YOU THINK GOD SHOULD ACT. Even true atheists agree on this point. The "personality" of a deity has nothing to do with its existence. Just because you dont like something doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Think about it for a minute, lets just say God does exist (:D ). When you die, you are face to face with him, what do you say, "Well, I just dont like your attitude". Does a Creator have to answer to His creation about His character? The answer simply is No. So, attack all you want, but in the end that doesn't mean that there isn't a God. And secondly, I love how these threads always start off with the idea the people of faith (whatever that may be) are suppressing free thought, and holding people down, and most of all condemming. But the question is, what exactly are you saying then about people of faith? That you think that we shouldn't think that way, and we're misguided? Wouldn't that mean that you are now the oppressor? It's a two way street, I know it's hard to see (I used to be in your posistion) but your stance that all religions are false doesn't make you impartial, you are just as biased as everyone else. Just less willing to admit it.

Good old humanism at its best.

Personally, and this is just my belief, I think that maybe life on earth is our hell. Once we die we are then judged on how we lived and will either move on to heaven or will be born again to live another life in hell. Think about it. This place is only getting worse. Why? Maybe because all the good people are now in heaven and we're stuck with all the ***holes.

That is an excelent theory! Definatly explains a lot. I have always thought the same as Suckerfish : "religion is a joke, a man made thing to keep the masses humble or stupid". What easier way to keep people under control? If the religion that I was taught is true, then every being on this planet is going to hell. Except for woodchucks and the very few humans that have never killed anything. Come on, now.....

Religion for me is "treat others as you would want to be treated". No more, no less.
