I've seen a lot of tanks with a lot of large ca/sa cichlids that basically have a piece of wood sitting in the center of them.. Is this better to keep down aggro? My tank has large rocks and driftwood all over, making a few caves/homes, that my fish guard, and with chasing. I'm not overstocked at the moment, and want that look with the fish swimming around, and not hanging around their caves.. Any suggestions?

What's your stock? How large?

With cichlids and a community tank, the more hiding places the better. Smaller non-agressive fish need safe havens for when the cichlids get rowdy, which they will - pending on the breed/species.

Besides that, landscaping the fish tank is a form of art I think. Some people are into it, others could care less.

135 - 6 wide 18 deep 24 high. 180 in about 5 months.

9" jag male
7" escondido male
5" argentea -sex ?
5" loiselli male
5" salvini male
2" festae female
18" giraffe cat

I'm really into aquascaping looking great, but I love the look of all the big cichlids swimming around with very little decoration, happy.. Mine just guard all their little homes and chase one another when they get near. Just wondering if it will go from one to the other if I remove all but the driftwood pieces, taking away the territiories..

And I don't need hiding places, the rt is always out with no problems

Man those are awesome fish....I can see why you would want them out in the open more no doubt.

hmmm

Thanks. Well I went and took all the rocks out, and basically have got a cluster of african root wood in the center 4 feet of the tank, still the same attitudes, the jag covering the caved area on the right, esco on the left, and chasing out all the others trying to hang in there as well. Wondering...

Would I be better off doing a small cluster on the left side of the tank, and another on ther right, leaving the center open?

Post some pictures.
:D

I vote for pics. I picked up a tank once from a guy with a 10" jack dempsey and about a dozen other fish in a 75 with no decor. They all swam along and got along well. There was even a 16" pleco in there lol. One of the fish was a well grown 6" comet ! no aggression issues... I couldn't believe my eyes.

10" JD? WOW
That's what the guy told me and quite frankly I believe him it was the biggest JD I have ever seen. He had it for 6 years lol :)
