Heavy Breathing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The ph is AZ tap water - its common to the southwest. This guy came from a lfs also using AZ tap water with similar PH. He's been acclimated. I have stuff to regulate the ph, but I never use it as all my fish are used to the harder water.

I dunno, maybe the little guy always was a goner and there was no saving him. I tossed a couple of ice packs into the tank and it brought down the tank a few degrees, now at 84. I've honestly been watching him for the last hour. His breathing seems to have gone from long hard breaths, to shorter hard breaths, but its hard to tell.

He just hangs down in the corner next to the plant, turns around on occasion. But no cloudy eyes, no white spots, and I saw him poo yesterday - it was thick and brown, normal looking.

Don't lower the temp. If anything, raise the temp. Just add an airstone. Temp should be 86 88.

The pH test says 7.5, but the pH could be 14 and that API test would say 7.5. Try getting a high range pH test (or it looks like you got the API kit which comes with one).

why 86-88? mine is almost 83 and they are thriving. I mean i think they are but still is there any benefit to having it that high?
It wards off many health problems common in juvenile peacock bass (IE Ick.) You will never see ick in a tank above 86, but you will probably see ich among baby peas in a tank about 84 and below.

are they sluggish at 86 degrees? Im going to try and raise my temp and probably add an airstone (like i need more aeration) just to be safe. Thanks for the tip

If your mono is breathing heavily i would try to oxygenate the water as mouch as possible, add aquarium salt to help its blood transport oxygen better, and keep the lights off to prevent stress.

my P.Bass are kept around 82F, have the recomended water salinity, and get water changes weekly.

the only time ive ever had a sick mono was when it was around 3-4" and the water temp was 76F when i first got him. he had ich but was treated and was better whithin three days.

good luck with the mono

Ok, added salt and there's an airstone in there. I switched up the setting on the filter to break more of the surface, so there should be plenty of oxygen. Temp is now around 82, but I bumped up the heater another degree. No light on the med tank.

I'll do a high ph test tomorrow, but I'm positive its around 7.5 as I've used the high ph test in the pass and thats what it is usually around. But still, it won't hurt to make sure.

Here's hoping he makes it through the night. I went out to eat and when I came back he was swimming around, but when I dropped in a few bloodworms tonight he hid instead of attacking them as usual.

Fingers crossed.

Just to note, the orinos are thriving and acting like normal.

Thanks everyone for all the help.
