Alright. I have been looking everywhere for a hedgehog. They aren't very common in new york, and I finally gave up a few weeks ago. Then today, I go on craigslist and what do you know? There's a free female one to a good home. I've been talking to the girl that has it and I'm probably going to take it. Ive cared for many rodent type animals before (and hated doing it) but I have a soft spot for these guys for some reason.

I've read the basics that can be found online, and they seem pretty easy to care for in general, but have any of you ever kept them? I was wondering if you could share some tips if you have, like things to watch out for, overall best diet, ect.

Thanks.

what was Sonics gf or was it just a girl version of sonic ? Anyway that's what you should name her !!! Lol gl man

:D I was thinking that I would consider naming it that. I usually only name my dogs, but I could make an exception. I loved those sonic games when I was growing up.

Same here lol that and starfox. Then came Halo and all that multiplayer stuffs,I ushaly name anything that just comes to mind after seeing it after so many years takes me about 3yrs to name my pets lol besides my dogs and cats cuz then the whole family gets involved...

I love hedgies, Ive had two one was a sonic the other was named velcro
From keeping them for quite a while I have found they really aren't like a rodent, well they aren't at all but they act like a shy, grumpy, slow, ferret

Handle them a lot on their terms, do not wake them up to take them out, wait until they're up and already out and about, this should help, they also do not like to have any feet unsupported

Get as big a cage as you can, no multilevel crap as they are honestly not the brightest critter

for food do a very high end cat food like royal canine and a hedgehog formula mix, plus they love apples, bananas and mealworms

i had one when i was younger...obviously named sonic... and he was real mellow, he just ate pellets and slept alot. i had him in a 4 x4 cage but when i let him out he liked to run alot...my advice would be to clean them alot. everything gets stuck between their quills

oh yea, dont use any shavings or that
just use paper towels/newspaper as it will need to be changed at least 3 times a week
also they love to sleep in winter hats

i didnt know anyone else actually did that! i used to put my beanie hat in his cage and he loved it!!!! best part is letting them crawl around you

yea i use to go to the dollar store every few weeks and stock up on them, they loved them
and each one I got he'd go in and lick it and annoit all over his back then go to sleep

The best setup I've seen for them was a rubbermaid with holes poked in it for the water bottle :).
