Hellbent's 300 Gallon Plywood for Aquaponics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the tilapia are getting bigger, but i want to them to be over 1lb before i try frying one up. most likely steamed chinese style actually.

i am not too knowledgable on how to grow lettuce, but it seems you can cull a few leaves a few times then the lettuce bolts and you have to trash the plant. hopefully you have some seedlings going already.

i bought some full grown malaysian prawns to live in the dwc rafts. they will clean up the fish doody and clean the roots. i had 1 prawn/shrimp in there from before, but they promptly ate him by the next morning. the filtering isnt working properly, i have it going straight from the tank into the dwc so its not as clean as it should be, but its working.

the system is a 300 gallon tank and i really only have 80 gallons of media filtering it. it should be 1:1 or at least 1:3/4.

geeze, not wrong bud, they literally ripped him a new a new @sshole!!

I had a hand at lettuce, outside no matter what i tried, they kept getting eaten. Slugs down here are packing ak47's and have iron guts. Inside under lights its was too strong, considering it was a communal planting with other veg. So no, i cant really give you first hand account of what worked for me, as ive hand limited success & decided buying it for $1 at the shops was ok...lol

I did research ways to get around it though, firstly there are types that are more resistant or go through blooming later.
Secondly, cutting down the total light helps, outside a higher ratio shade cloth can help based o your situation. And for captive systems, decreasing the nutrient temps can assist also. So abit of trail and error id say. However like i said, i gave it away.

Good to see your fish though bud, i'll confess though, 9min of the same shot is abit rich, i wouldn't even stare at my own privates in the mirror for that long :D

From the filtration stand point, yes its meant to be an 'on-par' ratio, so 1:1.
However you have raft system with no media apart of that ratio, so yeah, its logically higher.
However its only a guide, the real question is whats your actual tests showing?

oh, that picture is of the shrimp after molting. i had it in a 20gal and threw it into the raft system and it immediately molted.
a few days later i threw in those 3 monster prawns and the next day i saw floating white piece of shrimp and figured it out...

about the vid... once in awhile i like to zone out on it.. i had some nice hawaiian music but youtube blocked the video due to copyright until i removed all the music.

anyway, thanks for inquiring!

Excellent thread, Hellbent. I have heard of aquaponics over the years, but read up a bit more on it just the other night, and was looking at pictures of setups. I have to say you have one of the nicest setups I have seen to date. Bravo to you for all your hard work.
