hellion?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if its fish with a agresive attitude that you are looking for then triggers are the go, the clown trigger imo is one mean fish and generally will be the boss of the tank

There is no way he could humanly keep a clown trigger in a 55 gallon, he would need a tank twice that size. I do agree they are awesome, not as mean as the undulated triggers, but still awesome.

Why has no one said a V-tail grouper yet?

he would need to upgrade fairly quickly, so sorry i forgot to mention that

WHA-? An 8" grouper would be perfect for a 55!

grouper huh? sounds intersting

There is no grouper that has any business in a 55 gallon aquarium. Most of them need 180+, the V-tail is small enough for a 120 but nothing less. Your measurement of 8" is incorrect as they can grow to nearly a foot long. That being said, length is not the only determining factor for minimum tank size. The species habits, activity level, etc... go into determining such things. In a 55 gallon aquarium, your options for predatory fish are extremely limited. As mentioned he could get a predator that is small and upgrade his tank in the next several months. However, if the OP is intent on a 55 gallon tank he is pretty much left with lion fish per his request of having a large mouth. There are aggressive small fish, Flake mentioned damsels which do not have large mouths. Another interesting option would be an angler. They are small and relatively inactive, but they can eat fish as large as themselves thanks to their huge mouths.

How about a mantis shrimp. They are none to welcoming to guests. They aren't always out roaming but you can hear them in there sometimes beating on stuff.

An angler would be awesome in there. I think I might disagree with a v tail not working in there. No experience with them first hand but groupers like to perch on rocks not huge open active swimmers. i think it would be fine and I have seen some really neat interactive v tails at the shop.

Blue and indigo hamlets may also meet your requirements.
