Hello all, need some Red Devil Help Please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
keep testing the water after the changes. you said you have an algae eater in there right? thats probably where the ammonia is coming from. they're pretty messy. as for the WC i wouldnt do more than 25% daily, you need to give your filter a chance to build some BB (benificial bacteria)

u need to get that plec out of there for now.
they are pooping mahines, but it might not be so bad or urgent based on the size of the algae eater. keep us updated, and im pullin for ya and yo fish.:'(

Where is this ammonia coming from? The tank is less then 1 month and a week old, just one red devil, and i have done water changes 2 times since before this started.

Your fish produce the ammonia through waste, also uneaten food will rot and produce ammonia. Be aware that even when ammonia levels don't seem to be rising as much you will still need to be concerned with nitrite which are just as dangerous for your fish.

Why? Do you think that the BB will grow quicker in an ammonai level of 1ppm then with a level of .5ppm? Even with a level of .25ppm there is an abundance of ammonia, and the BB can only multiply so fast. The main concern is the health of the fish, so ammonia and nitrite levels need to be kept at .25ppm. Not to mention the tank will still cycle in the same amount of time.

Since I have done these water changes daily.

i am proud to say my fish is once again acting normal and eating (although not that much).

He seems perky.

Last check I did on the ammonia was nearly 0! The lightest shade of yellow possible.

I will check the ammonia once again today.

is there anyway to correlate the ammonia with the nitrates? In other words if my ammonia is low, is it relatively safe to say my nitrates are also low? or must i invest in seperate test kit?

you might want to invest in some aquarium salt... its good for helping heal the gash of his forehead.

also if you have your ammonia level down around 0 you wont need to do daily water changes. id just make sure to keep monitoring the ammonia to make sure it stays low. also make sure to remove uneaten food as that will contribute to your ammonia problem

Nitrates are not your worry, nitrites are what will kill your fish, you need to get a test kit that can test for nitrites.
