I have seen many videos on youtube and seen MFK.com and figured this is the place for me, so I found it and joined and want to say a big hello to everyone, some great fish keepers here it seems, Im looking forward to learning everything I need to know about my new hobby, well not really new, just renewed I should say lol. I had a pair of Oscars when I was in my early teens for around 4-5 years until I cracked my tank and had to rehome them, then I got a 60-70 gallon tank with salt water, had that running in my late teens for around 2-3 years until a bad glass cleaning episode killed everything in my tank one day......that was very upsetting, that tank was awesome! well I set it back up 10 years later which is about a year and a half ago, I have an Oscar, a fire eel and a blue lobster in there and gold fish that don't get eaten, and now are pets lol, Im pretty sure I might trade my fish in and buy a couple payara at the local fish store as soon as I get the latin name tomorrow, to see what kind they are, we will see, or possibly keep them as well, got to read more on them, I see people keep these with other preditor fish, but I would hate to put my fish in any danger, would rather give them up if it mean there going to be safe. I hate the Oscar I have the lobster I never see, check to see if its still alive once a week, but I love my eel, hes the best, hes the only one I want to read if I could keep with the payaras. as he is much bigger than the fish at the store and would not harm them, just want to see if they might try to take shots at him or not. to be honest I may not be able to part with him, so I might not even get the payaras even if I find they are a smaller type. Im not sure how fast they grow I plan to look after this post, on this forum to read as much as I can before I decide anything, I don't plan to build a tank for at least a year, when I buy a place after I move to alberta. im thinking 300g + at a minimum. just curious how long a couple 2-3" sabertooth payara "is what they are calling them, till I get the official latin name tomorrow", would be comfortable in my 60-70 gallon tank, I read they grow extremely slow, but what that means I don't know lol. I am also a snake/lizard/spider keeper, I have 17 snakes, a savannah monitor, grande terre leachianus gecko and a pocileothera faciata tarantula, the snakes I plan to breed when they reach adult hood, I have had them for 2 years now, so a year or so more and ill be producing some really nice snakes :) that's me in a nut shell, oh and im a welder by trade. Hello again everyone, off to search the site now :)

I forgot, I also had a Mini pin dog named Tank and a Bengal leopard cat named Boots. a zoo of a home, just the way I like it :)

so after reading about payaras on this site, im thinking the fish I seen at the LFS are tats if I remember correctly what they looked like, but I don't recall anything being colored really, most of them were bright shiny silver maybe a litter darker on the fins with huge fangs for there size, really bright like a silver dollar, I don't recall any orange on any fins, but I could have just over looked it, being how I was rather fixated on the teeth lol, half of them seemed to be swimming at an angle, btm of the tail seemed about inline with the top of there heads, but then we tossed in some gold fish and they all went nuts and gobbled them all back and seemed to be swimming straight. they are asking 130 each, they are about 3" maybe smaller, they are eating shimp but not very eager to eat it, is what the guy said on the phone, but they are eating non live food, they do love live gold fish but they are trying to switch them over more and more, but I wont get the latin name till tomorrow, im going to drive down there and take a pic to post and see if you guys can identify them for me before I get anything anyways lol I have a hard time believing anything, that anyone trying to make a buck tells me. but if they are indeed tats does that sound like a fair price, around here the last time I seen them in any shop was about 5 years ago, and im always poking my head around the pets/fish stores. im thinking I would really like to jump on the opportunity to get one even if the price is a little steep.

I am also new here! I have two vampire tetra that are amazing! They are about $40 at pet supplies plus if they have them. Other places would probably have them for a higher price, but $130 is a little steep, like you said. These guys do grow very slowly after a period of quick growth in my experiences and they are fairly sensitive to water conditions. I've had a very positive experience with them, though. As long as you keep up on water changes they should do very well. Their coloring is kind of weird, but it's cool! They have a kind of yellow tint to their fin areas, but have shiny silver bodies. They are very predatory fish, so anything that can fit in it's mouth (which is bigger than it seems) will get eaten. Otherwise, if you have fish that are bigger than them or the same size they are pretty peaceful unless they are being picked on. In that case they will snap back at whatever is bugging it. I have two peacock bass and a pike with them and they definitely hold their own.

thx for the input, and welcome to the forum. I wonder if it just my location is why the price is so different, I don't know about fish all that much, but I know as far as snakes go, I know almost all the snakes I own are half the cost in the states as they are here in Canada. I seen an old add here today on this site in Toronto, selling one for $80 and it was an adult, so I guess 130 is really bad, but then again that was a private sale and he needed it gone, and this is a fish shop, perhaps I can talk him down to a reasonable price.

Welcome to MFK! I've personally kept several different kinds of Payara and if you upload a pic I'll be glad to help you identify which kind of Payara it is. I've kept Armatus, Scomberoidies and Raphiodon. If you check my YouTube link in my signature you'll see my Armatus who was about 12 inches in the video cohabit with other fish as well as a feeding video. As far as growth rates Armatus grow the fastest along with Scombs and can reach a decent size in their first year. Scombs are prone to sudden death at the 1 year mark and as such are sold the cheapest usually between $35 to $45 each. Tats sell for around $125 and Armatus are the most expensive about $80 for a 2 incher and $250 for 5-6 inches. At least those where the going prices in my area when I kept them, things and prices may have changed. Again welcome to MFK!

thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I just got off the phone and they guy said they are not tats, they are armatus, he said they are not 3" they are actualy 6-7", he said they are $139 but if i got 2 and traded my sub adult Oscar he could do around 200ish just because they have had them for about 4-5 months and they just wont sell, hes got 3 total. Im a little hesitant on getting 2 being how i have only 70 gallon tank and don't want to have to build a tank for a year, give me some time to get to alberta find a job and then buy a place first, but 1 would do fine for sure till them im thinking, he said they have had no problems with them fighting at all, they were all in great shape when i seen then, and they seemed to be swimming in a pack formation the entire time, but i read armatus tend to be solo, and hate silvery fish,so im not really sure at what age they mature and become more solo or if its more a space issue which is another reason im thinking just one, as well as not knowing why they seem to be getting along fine? hmm. well im off to barter at the fish shop, ill post a pic when i get back with or with out the fish just be be sure :) but honestly it going to be hard to come home empty handed lol
