Hello, My name is Michael... and I have a filtration problem...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well at least you'll have plenty of filtration if you get a larger tank. ;)

Don't you mean "when you get a larger tank"?

Nice to see another Oregonian MFKer!

Get rid of the Penguion 400, the Fluval 404, the Magnun 350.

Now you need to make a decision.
Do you like the Eheim better or the XP3 better? I am a fan of both brands.

You dont need both cannisters with the sump. Hell you dont NEED any of the cannisters with the sump.

My Eheim is actually a 2078 not a 2076 and I paid too much to sell it for cheap. Since the Eheim is considerably bigger than the XP3 I think it is a keeper. The XP3 will be the last to go of the surplus filters. The worst part is I really want to end up with a terrestrial plant (veggie) filter.

I agree with your assessment though... the Penguin is an eye soar even though it is the easiest by far to maintain. The Fluval has always been a bit of a headache to get back together after cleaning and the smallest capacity. I like the Magnum 350 but it is the loudest of my filters and really not anywhere near up to parr with the Vortex DE filter.

I really figured I would get sympathy and some help enabling my problem with this crowd. :nilly:

I converted my magnum 350 to a water changer after I stopped using it fulltime. Placed either end of an Aqueon on the input and outputs. Works great and saves alot of water.

You do have ALOT of filters on that tank though lol , but the only thing I see wrong is the power you're using to run them all. Other than that, I bet it's a really clean tank!!

Now this is the kind of enabling I am talking about!!!!! I like the idea of dedicating the Magnum to a gravel (in my case sand) filter. Great idea!

I have the tank sitting in a corner with two windows and it gets 10+ hours of sun a day. It has very minimal algae. The Pothos are growing huge in the sun... they usually don't like that much sun but I guess being in tank water helps keep them hydrated.

I have such mediocre water pressure upstairs that I was running 50' of hose up the stairs to the tank from the downstairs bathroom. I thought that idea was cool for about an hour lol!!!

I realized my magnum was overkill anyways(and a power hog) so I fitted it with hoses and it works great. Sometimes I have to pull the hose off the sink to raise the water level in the canister, but it only takes a minute or two.
