Hello! My name is Lindsey, and I owned my first official fish tank when I was in 5th grade and got straight A's in school so my Dad bought me what I wanted...which was a fish tank! And it's all started from there!

I stumbled upon this website because I did something stupid. I have a 50 gallon tank with just an Oscar in it. Because it is taller than longer, I have only been able to house 1 at full size. My boyfriend bought me an albino adult oscar to try in the tank again for Xmas and my tiger oscar kept it pinned in the corner and didn't let it eat or swim. So I said screw it, I've always wanted an Albino and gave the store back my Tiger. He was aprox 13''. I wanted to get another pleco, which I lost mine being a bad mother and not cleaning the tank often enough and he was rocketing out of my tank. He was well over a foot long and I cried when I lost him. The store didn't have any plecos large enough for me to feel well about putting in with the oscar. So ...I saw this catfish with a red tail. I asked a ton of questions because those whiskers and big mouth kinda freaked me out. Anyways, 25$ later he is mine. I go home and research and I am not prepared for what I found out. 4 Feet long??? I'm screwed. This will be an interesting journey, he's a little cutie right now but there is no room in my house for a larger tank. So I don't know what I will end up doing. I would love any advice you can give me on redtail cats, I saw a lot of members own them. He looks maybe about 6 inches right now.

Here's the tank:

I made him a little hidey hole..well my bf had to..I'm 5'9'' and can't even touch the bottom of this tank. Pisses me off.

Close up!

So I belong to these house rabbit forums...haha (I have a lil bunny bun that runs around my room :) ) and a lady there has a 4 foot 7incher of these big boys and was filling me in. I have beefheart to feed him, he already enhaled 2 cubes. I also have some frozen silver colored fish, live feeder fish, large pellets and I am going to pick up some bloodworms. She said that the red foods will help turn his tail red? It's pretty dull at the moment. She also said I will have problems with him eating my gravel. I don't know how long he can stay in my tank...I am ready to do lots of water changes for him but I am sad that I can't really upgrade my tank until I move out...I am still in college and my parents will not allow a tank anywhere in the house because of hardwood flooring. So he might have to be rehomed when he out grows my tank? I so wish I had room for a 300 gallon tank in my room :( Well, I look forward to meeting you all and learning tons of info. Please give me any advice on how to care properly for my oscar and redtail cat!!!

Thanks!!!
Lindsey~

sell the cat, few months it wont fit, then eventually eat ur oscar when hes a big boy (if he ever got that far in life)

Really :(? At the fishstore they had about a 19'' one living with oscars =/ Obviously that guy wasn't going to get much larger in that 55 gallon. So he's pretty much doomed in my tank? Ugh now I'm all depressed.

Well this is all very disappointing, even more so that I can't provide a huge tank for him right now. I am really ticked off that the owner sold me this fish when he knows all I had was a 50 gallon. I wouldn't want to sell a fish to it's doom...I guess my 25$ was worth more than it's life.

In most places its about the profit, you were one sucker, and there is PLENTY more out there unaware.

Like others do and myself have done. Go to the store, write down the species of fish, name blah blah, go home and spend a few hours researching it and see if its right for u.

well in a few months you sell it or upgrade to something bigger I had one in a 90 for a few months ,then bought a 200 ,,he out grew the tank in a year, was getting to big to move had to get rid of it,,they eat alot of everything
