Hello all... I'm new here and the format is still a bit strange to me. I found the forum following a link from a Delphi forum I was checking out. Just starting back with a 55g salt water fish aquarium. It has been almost 3 years since we have had fish. Cleaned everything up, got new bioballs for the wet/dry, etc... just put in the live rock to start the cycle. (about 6# worth) Now comes the fun part - - - figuring out what type of fish we want to get. We did have a carnivore tank bafore (snowflake eel, porcupine puffer, shark), so are leaning that direction. Anyway let me see, other info - live in Sacramento, CA, ride a motorcycle and am looking forward to getting back into fishes.

<<Dump the bioballs and replace with live rock rubble. Bioballs are notorious for generating high levels of nitrates if not kept on a very strict maintenance routine>>

just put in the live rock to start the cycle. (about 6# worth)

<<You need about another 49lbs of live rock in this tank as you do not have any other adequate means of filtration>>

<<You have a good range of fish to choose from, all depends what you want to achieve with the tank>>

i agree with above you would at least need a little bit over 55lbs. of live rock. that alone should give you a good biological filtration. the livestock depends on what you wanna do...fowlr or corals...let it cycle and test to see if okay and you can go on forth...have fun

First I would get more live rock if I were you!
or at least some base rock(not live)

Even if I'm not planning a reef tank? For some reason I thought it was 1# of live rock to 10g of water to start the cycle... not sure where I got those numbers though.

And here I thought the wet/dry with bioballs were one of the better types of filters, and it seemed to work well for us before... I was reluctant to get too much rock, because we were thinking of heading towards the same type of tank we had before with the eel/puffer/shark combo. Not that its set in stone yet - LOL! There shouldn't be too much problem adding more rock after just a couple days should there? There is no fish in the tank yet, so if the ammonia spikes to high, we can do just a partial water change. Oh hey - another question - if I mix water ahead of when I need it, how long can it be stored in covered container (ie: 45g plastic garbage can)?

Thank you for the welcome...

Well I guess I better get back to the fish store and get some more... I have 40+ lbs to go... I just hope I will have room for fish afterwards - LOL!
