Hello; Water for tanks during drought

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hello; Good suggestions. I do have two clean spare tanks in a handy place to fill. I will cut down on feeding. I have a pickup truck and can buy some five gallon water jugs.

Hello; I can get down to two tanks. Reducing temp is also possible as I now have it a around 80F. Thanks for these good ideas.

hello; Back to my DIY skills. I can make more covers to fill the gaps. I already have several containers and may add more or fill empty tanks as suggested above. I do have one house plant.

Hello; All three tanks have live plants in them now. The pothos is something I need to consider.

Hello; Thanks for the suggestions and the quick responses. Some good ideas.

Check craigslist in your area to see if there are any food grade plastic 55 gallon drums. Here in Dayton, OH I was able to pick up two for $10 each and they are everywhere here. I just finished cleaning them out (they were used for corn syrup) and am getting ready to take them home and get them setup. They are plenty light enough for one person to move around empty and if you have a pickup then you can always load them up, strap them in upright and drive somewhere to fill them. This will work really well if say your water is out but you have a friend that still has water. Just be careful if you are getting water from a place other than residential because it's possible they could be using recycled water, like a car wash. The water has to be potable.

Hello; Thanks to all who have responded thus far. Several good ideas and suggestions I had not thought of. Sorry I did not respond to each individually but consider yourself appreciated.
I stopped by the water company today and while there asked about the water levels. Not down to restrictions on use just yet. No significant rain in the forecast any time soon. Maybe a few tenths of an inch on Thursday. Another water line break today from the unusually dry soil.

Hello; Be careful what you wish for. After five months of very little rain my area finally got some. Looks like we got too much in a short time. Along with over four inches, in a few places so far, since Monday night, we have wind damage, flooding and maybe a tornado in the area. With luck the fires may be out at last.

The worst so far is that the high winds came before any rain Monday evening and fanned the fires into an inferno south of me. In the foothills of the Smokies a resort town has largely burned. All is not known yet but many homes burned, some folks killed and many injured. There has been some national TV coverage of the Gatlinburg fires but my local station has been having ongoing coverage. WBIR channel 10. I think they have webcasts.

I have been very lucky. No fires too close. Lots of smoke the last few weeks. Not sure about water or wind damage yet as the sun is not up yet, but I should be OK. I did not have to use the evacuation bags I put together.
