Hello out there. I'm new here but have been in and out of fishkeeping most of my life. Currently I have a 35gallon hex tank, but my parrot cichlids have just about outgrown it. I have to to water partials every 2 weeks. I just got a 125gallon tank and am in the process of setting it up. I need some advice on some things: such as substrates, and I'm curious about all these elaborate filters in the DIY section that I've seen. Are they really necessary?

Welcome to MFK! There are many options for filtration on a 125. You might want to post in the setup and filtration forum for more information.

Thanks guys, I've already read alot and learned alot of what I had been doing wrong. Hopefully I can stop and start doing things right this time around. By the way, does anyone know anything about the Odyssea canisters? I just bought a CFS700. It looks impressive, but dont know how long it will last or how well it will perform? I also have a 350magnum canister.
