fishlover12, what is the filter(s) you have on the 55g. The fish you want to add to the 240g, are they currently in the 55g? Are you in the need of adding any other fish?

Be specific, makes things easier. What type of HOB filters? The fish in the 55g are the only fish you are putting in the 240g at this time?

You should be able to move the filters and the fish from the 55g to the 240g with no problems. It is still a good idea to test water params on the new tank regularly.

The filters are matched to the bioload of the 55g tank, the fish are the bioload.
Even if some bacteria is lost the filters should recover quickly. Do not add a bunch of other new fish right away this could crash the HOB filters. When adding new fish do it gradually maybe one every other week.

well if the 55 gallon filter has been running in a tank with fish then i would wait a week for the bacteria from the filter to start breeding on its own. do not put any fish in for at least a week, and id suggest 2 weeks. 240 gal is a lot of water and you dont want to get impatient(even though we all do) and put in a really nice fish and have it die the next day. hope this helps!
How does he keep the beneficial bacteria alive without waste for it to break down ?

How is will the bacteria "start breeding on it's own"?

Way I see it, you'll will be starving the bacteria in the established filter for the two weeks you have no fish in the 240g. You have to feed this bacteria, don't you?
