HELP AMMONIA!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not a bad idea to go and try another test kit.

For the fish to be thriving like you describe then obviously your water is ok, but to have a reading of 8ppm on one tank and 0 for tap water and 0 for your other tank, something isn't right. I have an 8pi test kits from 5 years ago, and they read exactly the same as the api master test kit I purchased 3 months ago.

tell me about it. ontop of that i have 4 canisters!
its just weird cause i had the same issue before

Another idea, do a good water change using prime, then take a reading about 1 hour after the change.

What type of bio media are you using ?

Are you shaking bottle 2 of the api ammonia test kit for 30secs as directed. (i know you probably are but have to ask to rule that out).

My thoughts were correct, api was WAYYY wrong, seachem shows 0.0 ammonia of NH3 and api says 8ppm.

Did you do the second test for non toxic ammonium ?

Seachem ammonia test requires two different tests one for NH3 and one for non toxic ammonium.

Api test is all in one and tests for both which is why you had the readings as previous.

yea lol ammonium is at 6 ppm
NH4 is non toxic so its all good. the toxic NH3 is 0.0 which is a relief
thanks for the help rhodes bro

Good to see you have it all worked out.

I still believe there is nothing wrong with the api test kit as it is supposed to show ammonia and ammonium. Good that you had a second test to differentiate between the two.

What do think is the cause of the positive result for ammonium ?

Prime. from what i know, it converts chloromines into ammonium and holds it in. When the ph is risen to 12 in the api tube, prime releases the ammonium causing the false reading
