The glorious US of A
i got a new 55 gal and did everything your supposed to do. i bought some tetras and a clown loach for it. most of the fish died except 5 including the clown loach. when i returned the fish the store tested my water and found nothing wrong. what may be causing this and what can i do to stop it?

Did you acclimate correctly? You know, float the bag, all that good stuff? What's your water temperature?

How long was your tank up before you added fish? Did you add anything to the water?

BTW, welcome to MFK and sorry for your loss.

Edit: How many did you add at once? It appears you added several.

What are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels? Is your pH stable?

You stole my thunda...

Mr. Mojo, smell you water.. don't remember exactly what it means.. but if it smells funny... not a good sign.. that is if you don't have a test kit.

i forgot the what they were but i got them checked at two stores and both said it was fine. is there a disease that would do this or did i just get unlucky and water smells fine

How many fish did you add initially?

i floated the bag and my water is at 75. the tank was up for a little over a week. i put the start enzymes and water conditioner in.

Unless you were adding ammonia to the water, I doubt the "enzymes" did anything. What is the specific name of the product you used for cycling? I've heard of mixed results with most brands.

Do it the long way, without cutting corners, to ensure stability. Just add ammonia to the water every day (either pure ammonia or rotting shrimp in pantyhose) and test your water in a month and a half. By then your ammonia and nitrite should be 0, and your nitrate greater than 0. Then, do a water change and add fish.

I'm being brief, but if you want a more detailed explanation you can read the stickies in the Setup and Filtration section.
