i added 3 schools with 5 fish each. so 15

I am sorry you were mislead by whoever sold you the fish. Adding 15 fish to a new 55 will cause your ammonia to spike! Your bio wasn't ready for that much waste all at once. Your fish burnt up in the ammonia concentrated water.

oh that would do it. how many should i add at once?
only add a few at a time when i first cycled my tank i always added one fish at a time take it slow never add more than a few fish at a time...

Are the 5 you have still alive and in the tank? If so, I would leave them in there (the Tetras anyway, hopefully the loach can handle it). You should do a 25% water change as soon as you can. Remove 25% of the water and replinish. Make sure you use a de-chlorinator or allow your replacement water to sit with a bubbler going for 24 hours.

The good news is, your cycle is now well under way since you have ammonia. (By the way, I am only speculating. The only way to be sure it to test your water)

Keep checking your water and once the ammonia level drops off, your nitrite level will rise. Sometime after that, nitrites will drop off and nitrates will rise. Once nitrates get to 20ppm, do a water change again. Check the water and you should be OK to add more fish.

In a 55, I wouldn't add more than 2 or 3 at a time.

Good luck to you...

You're most welcome. Keep posting your questions here. The MFK'ers will be able to answer anything you throw at them :)

Good luck to you...

They could be eating eachothers food the water temp could be wrong anything could be wrong they could be fighting anything! The things that could be wrong with them is endless! Once my fish died because they got poisined from the weird plastic in the filtres, some hid behind the heater and got fried!
