I got home and my new Aro got spooked and jumped into an empty Aquaclear filter that I hang on the back of the tank to plug up an existing opening. I guess that was a bad idea. As I tried to get him out of the empty filter he jumped out of the filter and fell 3.5 feet onto the ground between my tank and wall with no way of getting to him. Luckily he flopped his way along two walls and got to where I can grab him. I quickly grabbed him and put him back into the tank.

In the end he was left with 3 missing scales and no other visible injuries. I removed the empty filter and resealed the back temporarily and lowered the water level another 4".

What should I do?

Should I add salt and bump up the temperature?

if you have an air stone then use it to get more oxygen into the tank and add some salt. No need to get the temp up just keep the water in good condition. I got mine jump out before and when I try to catch it, the scale fell off. So in the end the bottom fin and tail got tear so I have to cut it in order for it to grow back. Now he is 14" :). As long as your water is good then it should be fine.

I already have aeration in the tank and normally add salt with every water change. Should I be adding extra salt?

No need to add extra salt if the tank already has enough since your last WC. aeration is more important as his gills may have suffered a bit depending on how long he was out of the tank. how was he able to jump out? is there a gap betwenn the cover and tank that your aro could fit in? cause if there is that should seriously be attended to first

I had an empty AC110 blocking up a gap in the back of my tank. I thought this should prevent my aro from jumping out since the only way to jump into the filter was a 2" high gap...and he found it! Nothing but net.

I've already sealed up the back. I really need to get my 450 built ASAP and get a good glass lid on it.

Next time he flops out let him flop around a bit to learn his lesson

the two times ive picked up fish off the ground its been with one hand flat underneath them and if they dont lay flat and control themselfs they are not going back in the tank. Maybe i have to much selfcontrol

You if you have a strong jumper like eel birchir aro ect you need to learn to cover every opening and weigh it down. Go get some plexiglass from homedepot and go nuts

Or maybe he just wanted to die. ever thought of that? why not let him

you are soo lucky you got home in time to save him, or should i say the aro is very lucky, afterall Asian aros symbolizes good luck :)... based on the picture looks like he'll do just fine if those 2 scales are the only thing chipped off... barbels looks okay and still straight (can't tell that much with the angle though) ... he is still a juvy so scales should grow back/get replaced pretty fast.... please don't ever leave a gap open again, jumping 2feet into the air is a peice of cake for them... I'll say it again... THAT IS A VERY BEAUTIFUL C.RED!!!! take good care of it and in a year you'll know why you paid that much and realize it was a very good investment
