hey bro. no worries... im just trying to figure this out myself... i did a 25% about 5 days ago... and just did a 50% now... and one loach is dead.... and the others are like gasping for air but the pbass seem to be fine... i dont know what happened. These guys are all small but i have had them for a while... well ill see whats going on tommorrow, im out of town and my wife has been caring for them. well, thats for all the replys so far....

Also i was getting this info from my wife.. she said nitrites first then just reconfirmed it was nitrates 20-40
My water leaves the tap at 20-40 PPM (nitrate)I don't see how this would be a huge issue. I however don't own clown loaches are they really that sensitive ?

what i am guessing too is that your ph test only reads as low as 6.0 . your ph could be lower than this which would be very acidic to your fish. Nitrates are a by-product of ammonia and nitrite being broken down by BB. even in tanks with healthy BB levels, nitrates will gradually climb. that is why frequent WC are essential. there are filtration methods that can help hinder the climb of these nitrates

nitrates would be a result in increased nitrites, no? but they dont seem to be extreme so idk what it could be besides unnamed/tested chemicals. it may be parisites as well but who knows. you can try treating with aquarium salt in order to prevent nitrite/nitrate poisoning in case they are sensitive to that.

wish we had a definite answer for ya. good luck with it hope it all works out

what causes the nitrates go so high
End product of a healthy nitrogen cycle. levels under 50 ppm are safe. Under 30 I would reccomend. I suggest checking your tap water for nitrates and doing larger changes if you believe nitrates are the issue.

is it possible that the tank has been contaminated with air freshener, pesticides, or some other aerosol or chemical? also, a swing in the PH could cause this to happen. has the ph been at 6.0 consistently?

6.0-6.5 has been the norm..

even a swing from 6.5 to 6.0 in a short period could stress out the fish

Do you water change, and add some stress zyme, and use a nuetral regulator to keep your ph to 7.0 wich is nuetral. I use Seachem nuetral regulator on every water change in my 125 and 300 gallon tanks.

Ok im going to go look for seachem neutral regulator tomorrow... is it good for fresh water?
