Help AT datnoid has been on its side for two days

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
First, I've never had to personally deal with this disease, so much of what I'm about to say is anecdotal. My recollection is that swim bladder disease is one of those fish diseases which is usually a reflection of some other underlying pathological condition...such as a bacterial or parasitic infection, etc. Since these two conditions are relatively easy to treat, if it was my fish. I would begin to administer combination therapy, consisting of a broad-spectrum antibiotic, coupled with an antiparasitic medication. I would give this a few days and see if there is any change. Also, I'm not sure if raising the temperature is actually a good idea. It seems to me that if your fish is stressed, then lowering its metabolic demands by dropping the temp a few degrees is the best course of action, coupled with strong aeration. Finally, was your fish defecating normally just prior to the onset of this disease? Since your fish is apparently fat, that means it has a lot of stored fat an can easily survivie off this for several weeks, if necessary.

hey, when my ITT does that he also turns very blotchy. I have found that adding more oxygen to the tank does the trick. He bounces right back.

I have basically done whatever I can without spending any money. I guess I would have to shell out some money to get some antibiotics or other type of medication.

By the way, he's not eating as well.

Just read this online

"Please note that sometimes it is not possible to cure chronic SBD. If the fish is obviously distressed and is completely unable or unwilling to eat then painless euthanasia might be the kindest thing for it. Most fish will deal quite well with mild SBD for long periods of time however; even completely upside-down fish usually cope for a while"

I'm also going to try force feeding it later today with boiled and mashed peas for constipation.

Personally, I wouldn't do this. I think the fish is already stressed enough. There are other things you can do if the meds don't work. Believe me, cold-blooded animals can live for a LONG time on stored body fat.

Dont force feed it... Its not good, it might choke

A year ago, I tried force feed one of my datnoid (the datnoid got beaten up by an asian arowana / very thin, see bones, wont eat, and missing a lot of scales / 6" for $20) with minnow, at first it seem it goes all the way in, but the next morning its dead (it got choked) :irked:

I guess I won't be force feeding it then. I called Pacific Reef in Torrance and they recommended tetracycline. What are your views on that antibiotic? I did some reading online and seems like its a "general" antibiotic for animals.

Tetracycline should be good. Administer ASAP.

Good luck, kababayan.
