picked up an awesome tank today. 125. only problem is it's not level. home depot only has the pink insulation foam. is this ok to level the tank out?! should i wait to find the white foam? and what size foam? 3/4" i think would be best. any ideas. thanks
I personally dont use foam on glass tanks, I believe that it can cause them to crack. Buy a pack of cedar shims, just use enough to evenly distribute the weight. Shimming under the stand is better too.
How about 125 gallons of water on the floor? I am not sure if you could consider that wrong buy I would.
I am not familiar with the pink foam. Whay is the tank not level? Is it the stand itself? The floor? Or the top?
If it were me I think I would try to level the stand or top and not the tank itself. IMO that may cause stress points on other areas of the glass which may lead to a failure.
i checked again and im missing piece of the stand that we left behind when we picked it up. silly me. but i still have to replace the missing "foot" i think this will be my first vivarium!!! or first real one anyways.
i'll lay out everything i got for $50
125 gallon tank and stand in good condition
2 light fixtures
1 fluidized bed filter w/ quiet one pump
100 lbs of fine gravel
jager heater 150W
water sprite
and i met a really cool couple with a million fish tanks!
Pink foam will not level the tank. There just isn't enough weight to compress the foam significantly, even if the tank is full. Level the stand as much as possible and then use a lower density foam, like the stuff they put under laminate flooring.
I say do both- level the stand and put some foam under the tank. I don't know about the pink stuff, but like Spoot said, flooring foam works great. You can often get large scraps for free from carpet stores or home renovations; check freecycle too.
