I've hear of this done before. I'm thinking of using my 50 gal to breed them. I've got a 4" female and 7" male. I'm worried about her getting beaten up. I've got a egg crate divider that fits my tank. So I know you cut a hole just big enough for the small fish to escape. Is this a good method and can some one please run me through how to do this.

dont cut a hole, unless you secure the jagged edges. Eggcrate breaks very roughly. And don't trust that your flowerhorn in the midst of panic will find that hole. I've had fish sneak onto the sides of bigger fish, only to discover that probably wasn't a good idea. They couldn't find there way back from the way they came in....and that was just a gap on the bottom lol.

Lift the eggcrate an inch above bottom of tank and place a flat clay pot holder or whatever in the middle between both of them. Make sure it's large enough to go out on both sides with a good amount of space. Even a flat stone will work.

How do I keep it held in place. I know this male with my last female he liked to push it down and I had small suction cups like 6 on each tank wall and he still managed to hit then of or shove it down. Thankfully nothing happens bad to either one.

hidey hole method are for cave spawners mainly. just 2 rocks on the corners were the eggcrate would sit on the bottom and place a flat rock or pot in the middle. Shouldn't be able to push it down with the rocks holding up the corners.

Oh, the rocks on the corners should obviously be higher than the pot in the middle to give it some room
