1 - your first statement demonstrates the irresponsible attitude toward keeping gars in general...it's not just about one species in this case (or currently in yours). if you just want to keep one species, then keep one...don't unnecessarily put another one in harm's way when it can be prevented. i thought we were better than that sort of thing in this forum but perhaps not.

2 - it's not useless without pics...it should provide some useful information and back up what many of us have been warning others about in countless other threads. it would be BETTER with pics, but i see the usefulness of those pics being only realized/utilized by some, the rest are just looking for photos of carnage.

as Richard had said, no one can make others take care of their fishes a certain way, but if you're going to post about it in open forum...be prepared to defend your position or at least receive criticism or support alike.--

Wow, really? :irked:

Oh come on man...
I do care about all Gars in general, that's why I keep my Spotted and Florida Gars in a separate tank from my Gator. I would never put anything in there that could harm them. Just like my Gator Gar, I love and care for him and would never put anything in his tank that could hurt him.
I put the longnose in there because he had no other places to go and there is no more room in my other Gar tank. Plus that LNG has been attacking all the fish in every tank he goes in, so my home was his last option as he can't attack the Gator Gar with any success.
If it wasn't for me that LNG would be dead or living in a 30gal tank where he can't even turn around all the way at a home where he isn't even wanted or appreciated eating once/week. Now he's in a way larger tank, eating multiple times/week and has a big buddy to look up to.

Now let's keep this thread on topic and do what we can to save this guys Florida Gar. Hopefully he can get some pictures up soon so we can get a better assessment of situation.

I agree that this is a good idea... but you were the one who made the 'well, the gator gar is fine so what's the problem?...' comment, and there was no way to tell if you were joking or not, so you must be able to see why things got a little off-track.

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate and respect all your opinions. They are a great help to me.
Right now I'm going to move my florida to another tank so he could be alone. Is there any medication that I can use to atleast heal the wound? or something like that?
I'm so sorry haven't posted any pic of him yet but eventually I will.
Anyway, can someone tell me the reason why my gator would attack his smaller companion...Is it because of dominance or hunger? (which I wouldn't agree on hunger coz there are always a lot of feeders in the tank)
I think E_americanus and xander could enlighten us on this. hehehe Thanks guys!

You don't need them for enlightenment, just read up on alligator gars. Sometimes aggression does not need a why attached to it. Your gator gar is just a big, mean fish that is going to decimate anything that it even thinks might someday fit in its mouth.

Just read up on your fish bro.

exactly. gator gars are a whole different class of gars (as are hybrids in most cases) when it comes to gar behavior. they are extremely aggressive and have a much higher drive to feed and dominate over tankmates. keep in mind, these fish are not found in this close of quarters in the wild...their environment may be different, but their base behavior remains mostly intact.

i've had gators of various sizes take on plenty of smaller and same-size tankmates, and most don't shy away from larger tankmates either. Richard has had gator gars EAT other gar tankmates that were of only slightly smaller size...on another note i've had a hybrid just plain kill a gator gar (likely the gator dominance in the mix of the hybrid).

in MOST cases mixing gator gars with smaller gars is NOT advised.

as for treatment of the wound, keep up with the water changes and add some salt/increase temp to 82F. this will help with preventing infection and starting the healing process, but we can't make an assessment of the damage and how the fish should be handled until you show a pic of the problem. good luck--

PS-- spatula, i wouldn't get on you case if you didn't make relatively asinine comments like your one saying "well the gator was fine, so whatever". just something to keep in mind.
