Help!!! Broken Thermometer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
u could always take 2/3 of the water out, and put the fish in that. hoping it does not have glass in it and quickly empty the rest. rinse it out very well then shine a light across the bottom to illuminate the remaining glass. then when it seems clean of glass put the fish back in.

what about the mercury? Is it one of those kind of thermometers? Did it have little beads in the bottom of it? If so you should gut the tank.

Yeah the beads were everywhere in the substrate. I pulled it all out as the glass shattered and looked like littles sparkles floating in the water and across the bottom. I took out 2/3 of the water as well. Tube with merc/alcohol did not break just outer tube. But I saw no way to just take out the glass. So the tank is filled back up now with less fish in it. I went ahead and moved some of them into another tank. My terror saw the O's were stressed and was just beating on them badly. They were not even fighting back like normal. Had to move them.

And the small beads were not lead as I was able to pick the last of them up with a magnet.

Now Question is should I use the substrate after sifting it or should I just get new stuff?

Thanks all.

Thanks all.

I would gut the entire tank, run your filter media in the cycling tank, clean the tank thoroughly, get new substrate, put your filters back in the tank and add your fish back from the cycling tank.

This is a good lessoned learned, always invest in quality components for your tanks!

Yeah my new tank has a digital thermometer that hangs on the outside with a probe in the overflow. I actually have been seeding my AC with some of the bio media as well as my new sump. So it is not a fresh filter/tank cycle. Getting a bit of a jump start.

I must have been lucky. When this happen to me my oscar just hit the glass once an it broke into a few big pcs. As said before get the probe style. An get your oscar some toys!

Oscar and GT fought. I think this is what caused the problem initially. And yes it shattered and was like little tiny glass particles everywhere even flowing through the water. Probe Thermometer is already on order. The worst part is I was just thinking about getting another digital like on my new tank the other day for this very reason. I am just glad the inside did not break. Not sure if it is mercury or alcohol. Either way I will never hang another glass thermometer in one of my tanks.
