I have put myself in a bind with my 585s filtreation I was planning on using 55s for th sump. I have 3 55s now sitting in my basement. I find out that they have tempered panels all around. GREAT!!!:irked: SO now I can't drill them.

So I was wondering since I still want to use them. Can this be done to salvage them.

Can you replace a tempered panel from a 55 with same tickness acrylic? so that way it is easy to drill? or will acrylic and glass not bond properly.
If they will work will Dow corning 832 work ? I have heard good things about it and wish to use it if I can find it.

If I can just replace one side panel from each tank with acrylic I am set and I won't have to buy any hole saws that I don't allready have. If I cann't do this I have to find a new home for these 55s and find a new tank to work with. Like a 45.

The tanks have to stay 12" wide to clear the doors in the stand. Or I would use one big tank in the first place.

So Can a tempered glass panel from a 55 gal be replaced with a same thickness acrylic panel?

Again HELP PLZ. I put myself into a bind

Would it maybe be easier to modify your filtration design. So that you do not have to drill the sumps. Like have them fill from the top and a pump in each one. Just trying to help and give you something to think about before a master chimes in. It might help to see a sketch of the filtration plan.

There is what I am wanting to do. Minus the poweroutage chamber. I think a good check valve will do what I want there. keep in mind the stand to this tank will only allow me to have 12" or narrower tanks in it. and the tank holds almost 600 gal. So I need to have 2-3 55s just to hold all the bio media and the return water AND what water will run into the tank in the event of a power outage that can't get pumped back.

naa,acrylic on glass wont hold
maybe swap out the tempered for just reg glass?
but get the reg glass drilled before the swap?

Swaping the tempered for regular is what I will do if the acrylic won't hold but if it would then it would save me like $60+ b/c its $14 a hole from the place that I'll get the glass.

Why is it that 55s are tempered all the way around? That's what I don't get

i also might change the size of the bulkheads not sure yet.

from my other thread about my 585 in the works pharho (sp) told me about it so I looked it up and perfecto is the only company that says what panels were tempered and there 55s are temp. all around.

The only company that will give you the 100% yes is Marineland. But if you readsome of the posts under Aqueon/AGA, I wouldn't try it. Maybe if you could figure out who made the tank, then you might know for sure.

good links Ill have to see if I can find date codes for the tanks I got. and call. That is if they say who made them. and go from there.

Looks like that's what i'm doing tonight lol

I think I would be willing to just get replacement panels that are not tempered. and replace them. It would be more work but whatever i guess. It's a good way to learn how to reseal tanks and replace cracked panels. lol once I can do that I'll buy up all the cracked craigslist tanks and sell them for profit lol not.

Thanks for those links!! I just got my new 125g i'ts a Marineland and I thought all of the glass was tempered, looks like it's only the bottom :headbang2
