Thanks for those links!! I just got my new 125g i'ts a Marineland and I thought all of the glass was tempered, looks like it's only the bottom :headbang2

Most tanks are only tempered on the bottom. But some of the largets tanks are not tempered at all like the 265 perfecto I don't think has a tempered panel at all.

that's what threw me when I found out all the panels are tempered in a 55

I beleive that they temper the panel of a 55G because it is one of the most popular sizes. Most people think a big tank is a 55G. I think a 55 is right about that size where you start dealing with stress on the tanks. The temper gives the glass a little extra durability if hit. That's the only reason i can come up with.

I would believe that. I think I am going to take a side off one of the 55s I have this weekend to see how hard it is to do. Since I now have three sitting. And one needs resealed anyway. If it's not to terribly hard to do i'll just replace the panels in the others and have the glass place drill them before I get them.

When you take the first panel off, break it to see if it is tempered. Drill bits are around $5 from TDK on eBay. If you are going to trash the panels anyway, why not just drill them on the tank. If they aren't tempered, it will save you a lot of work.

Yeah, I guess since you are going to take the panels off anyway, what would it hurt to try and drill them. You never know, they might be old enough for non-tempered glass.

exactly what i was thinking.

if they end up being tempered and you replace the panels with new glass substitute dow corning 732 for the DC 832. they are very similar, however 832 isnt available in clear, but the 732 is.

both are available from mcmaster-carr. the 732 is $6 bucks a cartridge

I guess I could do that drill first then if it breaks get new. I know that one tank has to be resealed anyway and one needs a new top frame. so a little work it needed.

I like the stats I have seen on the 832 i just have to find a place around me that stocks it. It doesn't matter if it's black. these tanks are going to end up being a sump so they won't really get seen

Yeah I think ill try to drill first. but I have yet to order my bits. I can't decide a size. I was thinking 3/4" but now I think a bigger bulkhead would be better. I'll know this week. I will place an order this week for my bit.

Have you tried it yet?

Do you have a LFS that already has the bits and can drill it for you?
