help choosing a fish

If you want a pair of fish and you dont want to go the LiveBearer route then you have to take a U-turn to Dwarf Cichlids! :) Pair of convicts breed like bunnies but not so colorful, Kribs are good as stated above, Laetacara Dorsigers are good too but not colorful. You can find a Cockatoo Cichlid which is rare to find where I live they are gorgeous! I dont know if they breed easily which wont match your requuirements. Ask your mom about these few fish stated above search them on google and show your mom and cross your fingers. :) If she says no then it was worth a try. Ill keep popping Dwarf Cichlids.

Kribs were a maybe, but she saw some Hemichromis bimaculatus (red jewel). Can anyone post pictures of their adult red jewels when they are not in breeding dress? Also any kribs when not in breeding dress?
How are longear sunfish? What are their spawning habits/fry care?

man, am i glad my mother is happy with the basic, age-old favorite.....GOLDFISH! i dont have to drive myself crazy finind her orandas or lionheads like she likes :D

have you looked into any african cichlids?? ive seen some quite colorful ones, however ive never kept them, so no idea about them in a 55g.

sajica pair!!!

how about a small group of neolamprologus brichardi daffodil. prettier in person than in photos. group care of fry by these. multiple spawns can stay together so you can harvest the older fry, leave the smaller fry to grow out, and never need to worry about predation. it would need to be a small group in a 20 gal but you shouldn't have too much trouble giving away the fry. very cool fish to watch.

I hear you! She was happy with the goldifsh for a while.
But I think she is looking for a peacock in the fish world - a rainbow of colors.
Now you know why I am asking! :nilly:
I convinced her that sunfish need a bigger tank, the sajica, and brichardi are out too.

I think I may have her on the red jewel. Does anyone know what the non-breeding dress of an adult looks like? I can't find anything difinite on google. Is the flash altering the pictures?

I think jewels or kribs are the best choice.
