Why not? Back in the Amazon where bichirs live, the depth of the water can reach more than 5ft. Keeps them in shape. Juveniles who can't swim up 5ft would preach just below the water surface. So I don't see why they can't have access to atmospheric air.

Just to make things clear, you said the height should not be higher than 2'. And now you said it isn't preferable? Kind of contridicting

Amazon? what species of bichir would that be? last i checked they were all in Africa, where they are the occasional droughts.

Also i made it clear in my reply that its possible but not optimal, so YES you can have it at 5 feet and also try it at 8 feet if you like, but in nature small once will prefer more shallow water with thick vegetation to avoid the big guys who might make a snack out of them.

I said ", so shallow is preferable." in the end of the statement, it did not mean it to be a definite 2feet, as i said i also keep them in 2.5 feet.

Senegal? That what I read from another forum, correct me if i'm wrong:popcorn:

Edit: Oops my bad, they are found in Congo River basin. Apparently somebody corrected it but the OP wasn't updated

Thank you guys.

I'm going with the 5'L x 3'W custom built tank.

I like keeping my endlis in somewhat shallow water; however I plan to provide different depth (meaing height from substrate to water surface). I want to provide a small emersed area for them to climb into if they want. I figure some nice emersed Cryptocoryne sps forming a shadowed, humid area there. The small bathroom window will provide natural sunlight for the plants.

This tank will be built probably in August since I'm movning in June (3 weeks from now) and have numerous tanks to set up first. I know my endlis will enjoy the extra swimming room.
