sorry to hear the bad news however you can't blame it on the gravel, its either you wasnt doing water or gravel changes on schedule. thats all its about unless you feed something with bacteria or parasites already
 
ok today everything seems good sick fish is out and dead others are looking better every few hours...

guy at the shop said it could have been something that made them sick, causing them to puke up chicken, causing the water to freak, making it worst for my big guy
 
ive never hard of anyone replacing gravel after a long time. thats silly, you could take it out and clean it, very good choice switching to sand. i would mix one part black sand to 3 parts regular sand, it looks really good. and you dont need alot of sand just enought to cover the bottom of your tank. light layer will be good
