Hi all,

I have an aquarium with fish in it and the water is extremely cloudy. I tested for Nitrites 0ppm and Ammonia sky high. What should I do because the fish are on top like gasping for air? I am doing 15-20% WC daily.

Thank you

50% water change immediately. Get some AMMO chips and add it to your filter or even put it in a bag and hang it in the aquarium. Treat the symptom and get the ammonia level down quick.

Then figure the problem that caused the ammonia spike and rectify it. Did a fish die and start to decompose? Did your filtration break down?

I have another cycled aquarium. If I squeeze the filter sponge of the other aquarium in the new aquarium will I make any harm apart of getting the aquarium with dirt from other aquarium?

AMMO chips will absorb the ammonia and get it out of the water quickly. I think you can even get it at walmart if you have a 24 hour walmart near you.

I have never used starter bacteria... I don't know how effective it is. You want to get the ammonia out of the tank quickly to save the fish. The bacterial starter solution may help get things back up and running but it won't be immediate.

How is the water change going?

How long has this tank been running, what size is it, and what stock do you have in it?

Agree to the above, you need a big water change to knock the ammo down, and then readd water with a good dose of Prime too. After it sits 10 minutes add your seeded bacteria, I only say 10 minutes because I like to give the Prime a little extra time first. If you want to use a liquid bacteria, Seachem Stability has worked for me, shake it until it looks milky. At this point follow the new tank directions on the bottle.
