add the salt gradually, and more importantly gradually increase the temperature to about 85-90 degrees. as you are doing this, change half of the water in the morning and half of the water in the evening. repeat steps for 3-4 days. unfortunately this becomes a big pain if you are treating a larger tank as your water changes will take some time, but its worth it. good luck!
