Help , cutting my power

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
your fish will be fine without filtration, but aeration is your issue. anything to churn the water pretty good will keep them going for a day. not an option for you unless someones home, but when my power cuts out I just use a big ass spoon and churn my tank water every 45 mins or so until powers restored. ghetto but I've never lost a fish and have had some 5-8 hour outages.

as suggested, battery powered pumps, bait and tackle are the best bet being that they are a general live well accessory.

Also, you probably already know but since it hasn't been mentioned, don't feed you fish anymore until after the power is back on. This will help keep ammonia levels down.

As for a generator, you could probably rent one from a tool rental place, maybe even Home Depot, for the day. That would probably be the best option.

Good luck!

Hello; Much will depend on how heavy the stocking of fish is in the tank. By that I mean do you have so many fish in the tank that they cannot survive without mechanical filtration/aeration? I use to run my tanks in that overstocked condition.

If your tank is overstocked then the suggestions so far will help. A battery powered air pump being the simplest and quickest aid. I have seen them at Wal-mart. In addition, do not feed the fish while the power is off.

In the last few decades I have gone to a light stocking in my tanks. The fish can and have been fine with power outages for up to four days with no losses.

As for the $400 generator, is comes down to how much the need to keep the fish alive is and no so much that you wil only need it for a few hours. There are cheaper wayss to get aeration for the tank.

With bubblers, reduced feeding (or no feeding), water changes, and mechanical water aggitation fish can be kept alive for some time.

Good luck

As S skjl47 posted, it really depends on your stock level....and also temp. With cooler temps, water holds O2 longer and fish activities/respiration/metabolism slows down. So, turn the heater down to 70 (for tropical fish)

If you're not heavily stocked, your fish should be able fine for the 8-10hr period. If your stock on the heavier side, and you can't get a battery operated air pump, do 20%w/c every 2-3hrs with all cold water.

I really really appreciate all of your guys feedback. I forgot why I loved MFK thanks everyone. I have quarter size angelfish a baby snowball pleco and a 2inch severum in a 90 gal
I work from 7-530 construction but luckily my girl will go to store for me and get the battery air pump. Just for today and next time I'll be more prepared. Thanks again

Sounds like you're well under stock. How many angelfish?

Right now I have 6 angelfish there all same size bout a quarter size

You are well under stock for a 90gal, so aeration is not necessary. As long as the water doesn't go over 90, you should be all set.

My girl is on her way with the battery air pump just in case and I have my water at 82 but with this SoCal heat my tank goes up to 88-90 everyday
