I'm a big fan of external overflow boxes, but you have already stated that space is an issue. Consider an overflow box in the center of the tank if you want maximum esthetics. Here's a pic from Midwest Custom Aquarium's gallery. I think the tank is beautiful, and the internal overflow box does not detract. IMO the tank would not be as nice if there were overflow boxes in the corners of the tank.
Custom Aquariums presents the Stealthbox, an external aquarium overflow box which has 1200, 2400, or 3600 gallon per hour capacity and no visible water lines!
