i got a 55 gallon barrel and a 15 gallon one. i want to keep my feeder fish the the 55 and make the 15 into a filter. i want the 55 to sit on the floor and the 15 is gonna sit above it on the table. im gonna use a pump to get the water up from the 55 to the 15 and just let the water fall back into the 55. now how big of a pump would i need? the water needs to go up a couple feet to the filter..any suggestions on a size of pump? and if this is a good idea or not? any other help would be usefull also.
thanks paul

if your going to do that, get a ball valve to control the water going in to and out from the 55gal. How many gallons per hour pump are you getting? But, 2x ball valves can control the flow.

I would be concerned about flooding if you're using gravity to return water to the tank i.e. the pump stops pulling water out but more keeps coming in... But I'm no expert.

gravity is your biggest concern, to be honest man, i dont know what your feeding, but that whole contraption for a feeder tank seems a bit much, i would just stock the 15 and buy your feeders per 2 weeks or so depending on what your feeding than just by a filter that can keep it clean enough

well i have a ten gallon but i cant keep many fish in there the amonia goes so high and they start dying.so i want something bigger so i can collect them in spring or buy larger amounts. the setup will be in my basement its not really a livable space so if it overflows that wouldnt really matter to much. i got 2 yellow bullheads, 3 large mouth bass, and 2 sunfish i need feeders for maybe not the catfish so much but they eat the fish to

then you just need a cycled tank for your feeders. take a filter cartridge from an old tank or some of the substrate to jump start the bacteria. after its cycled the ammonia should not skyrocket like that.

Meh, don't scratch your original plan it will work fine. You won't need ball valves as long as the output of the filter and hand more than the input and you don't have to worry about flooding as long as 1) you don't care if the thing overflows by about 10g in a power failure or 2) you leave about 10-12 gallons of room in the tank. You could also get the best of both worlds by sitting the thing in a $10 kiddie pool from walmart. It might be ugly, but hey, it's in the basement.

my 10 is cycled i just put a 2nd filter that is cycled (both are rated 10-30 gallons) to in there to see if that helps. i was gonna use a kiddie pool but i came across two 55 gallon aand two 15 gallon plastic barrels for like 10 dollars. now all i need is the buy things to make the filter and a pump.. any idea on size of a pump i might need maybe 400 gph?
