I'll play around with the sizes untill i find some measurements i like.

Move some of your stones to the area that the sand is getting washed up. It will divert the flow so it does not kick up the sand. Below is a pic of the corner of my knife tank. The quartz crystals break up the flow to the point that there is no sand movement.
