Hi,

I hope this is the correct place for my question.

I am looking to start a second tank in my house. I would like sand as well as my substrate and I am wondering if I find cheaper sand. I purchased pool filter sand from ACE for $13+tax. I live in New york city (11366) and would like to know if anyone has found sand for cheaper. I am avoiding play sand to not deal with any problems it may cause in my tank.

I am happy wit the sand I purchases but would just like to save some more money. This is the sand I purchased.

silica sand from and hardware stores is cheap.. Its used for sandblasting... About 6 bucks for 40 lbs of it comes in a few diffrent colours... white, black, grey.

Hello; Two years ago I purchased 3/4 ton of construction sand from a local cement company for $15. I used much of it for a yard project. I sifted some of the remainder and discarded the very fine stuff. There is a wide variety of particles in the sand and you can get a suitable size for little money and some work. I have made sifters with screens of various sizes in the past that allowed some control over particle size. I have also used kitchen colanders. Vigorous washing is still required but is easier if the very fine stuff is dry sifted and discarded first.

Yup. I am trying to save $6 bucks here and $6 bucks there. It adds up and with two tanks the expenses just add up.

Maybe someone also know of sand that is only slightly cheaper but has a better color and/or look to it. There is no point of being rude, not everyone can afford the same things.

Hello; I have often felt a money crunch and needed to reduce expenses. When I find a method that works and costs less, I go for it myself.

I use black beauty blasting abrasive. It looks awesome and it has the perfect weight and particle size and settles quickly. not to mention its extremely cheap. I went to a local construction wholesaler, picked up 200 pounds for 40 dollars. It requires some rinsing but it wasnt too bad at all. My fish love it and their coloring is better because of it.
