hey guys, Im new and am looking to start up an aquarium of my own. I have never had one before, but one of my good friends is pretty much an expert and can guide me along the way.

my main question is, is what size to get. I dont want to just have small fish like tetras, I was thinking of basing my tank around 2 or 3 blood parrot fish.

what size would be required for them to be happy? I just found a really good deal on a 40 gallon on craigslist, would that be big enough?

I bought a 30 gal recently and right now, I feel like this is not enough. I think you should go for a 60-70 gal.

Get the biggest tank you can. Everyone here will tell you they wish they had a bigger tank. Pick a good place out in your home to put the tank. A quiet location, not near the surround sound or the Xbox. If that location is 6' then go with a 125 gallon, if it's only 4' go with a 80 gallon and so on. Craig's list is the way to go for equipment and tanks. Your going to love this hobby :)

I can honestly say I have.never kept blood parrots, so not much help there. I will say the bigger tank you get the easier it will be (as long as you don't overstock it) to take care of during and after the cycle. With more gallons ammonia and nitrite spikes will do less and less damage and allows you more time to take care of the problem before you lose your fish. I think if more people understood this, less would get discouraged because "everything I put in there dies". Just my two cents.

biggest you can, as people say, so you won't regret it later for getting a smaller one. But if you're like many here on a budget, looking for a great deal on craigslist, look for a 55 gallon tank, they are very common and go for under $100. they are also an adequate size for a trio of adult blood parrot cichlids.

oh yay! this forum is really active

so 55 is the smallest I should go? I have a designated spot in my room I hope a 55 would fit there... does anyone know how long across that would be?

and also what fish would go good with the parrots

I want an ID shark but Im assuming that would require a much bigger tank?

well imo get the biggest u can get ur hands on or u will regret later....plus dont go for the parrots right in the beggining since its a new tank...get something a bit cheaper to cycle the tank and then think about the parrots
