My Sajica got his fin nipped so I moved him to my planted tank to heal. Days later I observed that his fin was turning white. Looking closer, I notice the same on another fish, then another. It looks like a white filmy substance on the tail base, and fins. Now fins are clamped and I'm beginning to fear the worst. Any help diagnosing the problem and suggested treatment would be appreciated. Thanks.

If there is fin nipping going on, it could just be nipped edges...Post some pics.

The white edges indicated bacterial infection. Separate it for a few days and do daily water changes until the fins recover completely. If this does not improve, then you may consider adding Maracyn to battle bacterial infection if it persists. This is not fungal infection.

:iagree:

No need to throw an antibiotic at every little infection. Use a broad spectrum anti bacterial remedy like ESHA 2000. JBL, Tetra, Sera, etc. all have similar products on the market. Or just good all malachite green.

Thats nice and all but I have the same scenario and I will be following Lupins advice. He has proven time and time again in this section he knows what and when to do things :)

Without pics, this is all speculation. Could easily be nipping damage. Could also be fin rot...Again, without pictures, there is no way to tell.

Sorry, I can't get a good shot. I'm certain that it's something more than fin rot though.
There does seem to be some improvement. This morning I noticed that fins weren't clamped, improved color and behavior. I had used melafix a few days back, then pimafix the following day. Water change yesterday, then added API General Cure. Why I went with the General Cure, I don't know. Seems to be producing results though. I had attempted to get the fish out of the tank for quarantine but it's too heavily planted. I'll update tomorrow, hopefully with pics. Thanks for your help.

And without water parameters there's no way to tell either. With good water most fish heal right away from fight damage. Do you have a test kit for ammonia & nitrite, by any chance?
Edit: General Cure is for parasites. I don't think it'll do a thing in the world for fin rot or torn fins.
