Help! Green Stuff Seeping out of Substrate!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well the water change is all taken care of now....the fish doesnt even seem to be bothered by it at all. but the water is all clear and there is no visible sign of the "kryptonite".

any thoughts on what this stuff is?

did you vaccum the gravel too?

its just some toxic radiation build up-happens from time to time.no worries just dont eat the fish:ROFL:

do you have any green lights under the tank?maybe the light on the surge protector ot filter or something that may just glow through from the space in the gravel??????

yeah stirred it all up and let the filter run for a few hours before putting my wolf back in. It was a really messy job......anyhow

I have no undergravel lights or any kind of lights at all..but the top light.

Like it was said before, it's cyanobacteria. It's a gram-negative bacteria and NEEDS to be treated with medication, preferably something containing tetracycline. Just doing a water vacuum will only take the largest portion out of your tank. Unfortunately by the time you see an outbreak, it's already well established in your tank. Treat it now and treat it aggressively or it's going to be an ongoing problem.

i cant see the pics here at work (hey, i work for the gov't and they firewall everything) but dont go dumping antibiotics in the tank. Most bacterial issues in freshwater tanks are gram negative.. and guess what? the beneficial bacteria IN your tank that youre fish need is also gram negative.

you will kill off your good bacteria. i would just make sure you sift through your substrate well, do lots of waterchanges and if it doesnt hurt the fish i wouldnt worry about it.

thats good to know. Thanks.

So I should just do good portion water changes frequently for a few weeks then?

Cause all I did was do a 50% water change and stirred it all up pretty good....I think I'll do another water change again just to make sure I can get rid of it....

just got home and i can see the pics now. its hard to really tell because your sand is black. i have sand in my tanks and i get a dark green algae in the sand-you can see it at the edges through the acrylic. it doesnt bother anything. i just sift through the sand really well every week when i do a waterchange and get it out-and it just comes back.
the fish dont eat it, Mr. Pleco doesnt either. but since its not harming anything im not going to dump antibiotics in my tank.

keep in mind, some antibiotics are hard on the fishes organs (kidneys, etc) and when you dump meds in (some ppl tend to put more than prescribed thinking it will do even better-and thats a misnomer also). maracyn plus abuse can lead to kindney and organ failure and is hard on higher ph level fish-like marine and african rift lake cichlids.

this is one of the best pages i have found on antibiotics for aquaria. i keep it in my favorites so i know which ones to use:
