Help I am a novice

Sounds like an tank thats experiencing bacterial blooms, perhaps from an incomplete cycle, as already mentioned.
What are you water readings?

I can't get rid of the ammonia. I have 12 cichlids. GORGEOUS too or I wouldn't be so distraught with this gigantic mess of a tank. They are about 2-3 inches and seem to be doing fine. Except when my son forgets to feed them and one eats another (we started with 14.) I need a reset button. Got any ideas? I'm thinking of going to buy 40 gallons of spring water and a different filter to put in until it cleans up. Got any ideas for me? It looks cloudy and dirty despite having a water change 3 days ago.

we are only feeding the cichlids once a day per pet store. Although I swear we are starving them. And if we are late feeding them they eat each other. Started with 14 and have about 10 2-3 inch nice looking fish.

ok yes I have read this 3 times. This is exactly what I have. Please explain to me what is the filter? These ball things? Where exactly is the "pump" in this thing?

what is an Emperor 400? A filter? Similar to an Aquaclear 70 that someone else suggested? What do I do with the fish while I empty and clean the whole tank? Leave them in a bucket for the hour?
