I am going to get a 55 gallon aquarium I have a jack dempsey and he doesnt attack anything that's not a cichlid or my hand.... I have him in a 37 gallon with a peacock eel who doesn't occupy space cause he spends his time under the gravel except when he wants food then I hand feed him. a pleco who spends most of the time under a rock or sucking on rocks and a raphael catfish who sleeps except at night then he goes crazy and swims like a maniac. I want to buy a bichir they seem fun and would add a fish that actually seems like its alive. the problem is the only petstores in my area are some petsmarts and petcos but their bichirs are to small should I get a tank divider and how could I get the bichir to grow big enough for me to house him with my other fish. should I buy him now and have him in my 37 or wait till I have the 55 or will it be to hard for him to catch up to my jd growth.

my jack Dempsey is only 3.5 inches. the bichir I had my eye on was very lively and the same length as my Dempsey but hes not half as thick he seems like a worm.

Probably a senegal you saw. Yeah, get a divider. A 37g is too small in t he long run

get rid of the pleco they can hurt the bichir.

You dont have too get rid of the pleco. They CAN POSSIBLY suck the slimecoat of the bichir but you will notice it right away, i wouldnt get rid of the pleco unless you had too.

What kind of pleco is it? And do you have the space to have both tanks set up at the same time? The reason I'm asking is because, as said before, some plecos will suck on the slime coats of bichirs, so you may have to sepparate them, which wouldn't be a problem if you can have both tanks set up, b/c you could just move the pleco back into the 37g (as long as it isn't one of the large species of pleco, in which case a 55g would be too small anyway).

well my pleco my eel and raphael cat don't bother each other they all sleep together in the same cave. I provided other caves but they just stay in there together so my pleco doesn't do much my raphael follows him and actually sleeps on top of him or the pleco on him so I am not worried about my rubber lip otherwise my eel would have wounds. I am very happy my eel decided to swim today so hes been active today just when I thought he was lame.

hes a rubber lip/ bull dog pleco grows up to 6 inches
a raphael cat
a jd male 3.5 inch
a peacock eel 4.5 inch
( all living in harmony except for the tip of my raphael cats barbel not sure if that was my jd. tho its strange because my Raphael actually bumps into the jd when he swims and the jd ignores him. i think he might have though it was a worm or something.)

i know its too small thats why im upgrading it was my first monster fish tank got it in january took me only a couple months to know that I needed a bigger one figured if my parents got used to the 37 I could upgrade slowly.)

should I buy the bichir now or when I get the 55? I think I might get him now cause the one I saw came up to the surface like a cichlid thinking I was going to feed it.

I cant wait for the 55 I got some dry wood from the forest a dry log hollowed out by wood peckers some cool branches. :nilly: cant wait to set up my new tank ill post pics when its all set up.
