Help ID Large Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok, I have managed to get some more shots, heres a cool guy, relitively fast, not too agressive with the others, his bands are quite striking i think, there is almost some blue also, kinda, more like a sheen, it came out a bit in one of the shots below, he's about 7-8inches long.

anyone have any ideas, its the same shape as some blue ones I have also, the last pic is the blue one, it looks like what I picture as a default malawi! not sure of the name though, anyone have any ideas on the yellow guy mainly, but the blue guy also...

theres a couple more im having difficulty working out but there fast, and im still trying to get some more shots, they will come shortly...

1st looks like some sort of metriaclima...possibly a hybrid. Unless its a metriaclima lombardoi? But I've never seen one with a blue head
2nd is most likely a metriaclima estherae

the heads not soo blue as such, I think the flash made it look bluerer then it is, its just a sheen lightly covering when you see its scales reflecting any light. side and tail mainly.

I was thinking some kind of Metriaclima hajomaylandi, cross breed, could it have breed with a lombardoi? seems to have traits of both.? [happy to stick with Metriaclima hybrid though]

having a look around, some Pseudotropheus Lombardoi seem to have the blue sheen with yellow underneath...?

and I think spot on for the 2nd.

there are a few more ive managed to get some usable shots of as well.

1st, marbly guy. ive got no ideas at all... placid [in comparison to a few], he gets the food he wants, its about 9-9.5 inches
and only gets darker when he's in a mood.

these guys below I really like, but its been suggested they are from a different lake altogether [victoria??]
it seems to be a pair [male/female] and they front each other often, mouth to mouth, they are the small ones of the tank at about 4 inches for the small one and 5-6 for the male [i think] ive been told they breed a lot
there is also another shot of the yellow fish [in first pic] from the last post which shows a bit more of the blue sheen i mentioned.

male on his own

any thoughts?

Sorry for the late response, been busy.

1st is a Nimbochromis Livingstonii...very nice fish btw :)
2nd is definitely a lake victorian cichlid. I'm thinking its a Astatotilapia Latifasciata? This is a nice fish too. The one under him to the right is also a lake victorian cichlid...that one is probably a Astatotilapia Brownae.

I suck at identifying lake victorian species lol...guess I gotta work on improving that.

thanks for that, dont worry about the lateness, took me ages to upload more pics anyway.

Yes, I believe they are lake victoria, however as far as I knew, the bottom two pics [very bottom showing both] are a male and female that breed reguarly, Im yet to witness this myself but the guy I got the tank from said as much. I will have some time later to check out both breeds you noted and see. Thanks for all your help here, its much appreciated.

my overall plan for this tank is to let most of the fish go but keep the Tangkanyikan's, I have questions about this but will save for a fresh post with proper titles.

for now though, I have a few more pics, and then im done for the ID assistance, again, youve been a massive help, at least I have some latin names to go googling with.

will upload some this evening. also, im not looking for instant replys, ID'ing can take time anyway, and what with time differences and the such, it makes no difference.

ok, finally I have two more fish I need to ID, the first seems to be the one being chased away, never the chasing.
SAM_1451.JPG
secondly, is the Prehistoric Rock faced croc'a'catfish, i think no matter what he has to stay, I just dont know what it is...

theeelydinocrococatfish.jpg

this is it for the IDing request, I will be selling these fish off one by one though untill all im left with is Tanganyikans, Ive fallen for the frontosa here, and a couple of smaller fish lurking around the rocks!!
also the Fossochromis Roasratus must go, he's a menace, charging around, making everything else scatter and crash. tis a shame but i feel his time in this tank has come to an end, and for that reason I will be posting his pis elsewhere in this forum to see if there are any takers, anyway, this is for a different post.

ClownKnife, youve been a massive help, although im not convinced entirely about the victorians? (only as im sure they breed, would that not mean they would be the same? or are they not too fussy???, heres another shot of the assumed female, I guaruntee its the same fish, just showing more dark sripes)
DSC_0749.jpg

and the 'some sort of metriaclima...possibly a hybrid. Unless its a metriaclima lombardoi?' im curious to hear your thoughts on a possible Pseudotropheus Lombardoi traits/cross?

1st is a Yellowfin Borleyi
2nd is a bichir...I don't know my bichirs well so I'm gonna guess on this...polypterus delhezi?
3rd looks like a Haplochromis Sp. 44 thick skin...or an astatotilapia brownae...

polypterus delhezi seems spot on to me, I may find myself PMing these other members, However the Victorians are possible keepers, So may not be soo nessacery. thanks for your assistance ID'ing these, like I mentioned, Its given me some Latin names to google around with and see what comes up, although most cases, I think youve cracked it. Big Thanks.

I will be posting more here I think, depends if I can find what im looking for in old posts.
