Nice fish:
A) Anyone kept them with a Flagtail before and if so any issues or did they get along ok?
B) Ok as a single species in a community tank or advisable to keep in numbers?
C) Are they on the skittish side or more relaxed in nature?
Thx.

When my three were smaller, I got them at 3", they started off in a 180g. I had a flagtail in with them with no issues. Even as they started getting bigger there were still no issues. I didn't find them skittish at all in my 180g. Now they're in my 360g they seem to love the extra space. I've never witnessed any aggressive behaviour to one another, or any tankmates. Just a chilled out good looking fish really. I don't know about keeping them on their own because obviously I bought three at once, not because i'd read that they do better in numbers, it was just because the guy at the fish store only had three left so I thought what the heck and snaffled them all.

The only downside which I will eventually face is that these guys get huge. Up to a metre in length in the wild. But even in my 360g they might still hit 24", I hope i'm wrong and that they stay somewhat smaller than that.

Thx, that's great info. And I expected to them to get decent sized but admittedly not quite that big, will be interesting to see how big yours get.

I'm currently thinking about adding a tank mate or two to a 375 that only has a ~10" Flagtail and 8.5" NTT Datnoid. I know the Flagtail enjoys swimming with other fish, but the Dat is pretty anti-social so the FT gets bored and spends most of his non-cleaning time fighting his reflection. But I don't want anything too skittish (like Balas) or something the FT would fight with, RFCS seem like a potential good option worth researching/considering further (though based on what you say I would likely only add 1 if I went that route).

I agree with esoxlucius esoxlucius about this species. My experience with them is that they at often, alot and everything. Grows quite fast. I aquired mine at 30cm two or three months ago and he is close to 50cm now. It might be because i feed ALOT. But still :nilly:

Haha a mixed diet of blanched peas, mussel, shrimp, herring, sardines and anjovis from the local thaishop and sturgeonpellets. My fish grows like weed. I have an lima that has more then doubled in size from 10cm to almost 27cm in three months

I love balas. I have three in my 360g. When they were in their previous tank yes, they could be quite skittish, i'm not talking glass bashing skittish but they were always aware and they'd dart about. As soon as I put them in my 360g that all stopped, same for my chalceus too, which would often go berserk in my 180g.

If you like balas i'd reconsider your options if you have a 375g. I'm pretty certain you'll find them to be quite placid in a bigger set up like you have.
